Partnership to End Addiction: Advocating for Family Support Resources
Decades of research show that when families are supported and armed with effective information and strategies, they can significantly influence
their loved one’s substance use along every point of the continuum, from prevention, through treatment engagement and completion, to recovery
support, relapse prevention and harm reduction. Having a loved one with addiction can strain family relationships and impact family members’
mental health, but there are effective strategies and supports that exist to help both the individual using substances and their loved ones.
The Supporting Families Through Addiction Act would create a grant program providing $25 million over five years to help national and local nonprofit organizations provide support services to families impacted by addiction.
It would help establish a family- and community-based approach to addiction treatment that addresses the critical but often ignored impact on families. The bill (formerly called the Family Support Services for Addiction Act) passed the House in the past two sessions of Congress, but it has not moved beyond introduction yet this session.
Congress may pass legislation related to addiction before the end of the session this year, and lawmakers are more likely to push for inclusion and passage of the Supporting Families Through Addiction Act if they hear from their constituents how important this is.
